Two Michigan Chapters Honored Nationally at Best Buddies Leadership Conference
Best Buddies Michigan is proud to celebrate two of its incredible chapters — the University of Michigan and South Lyon High School — for being named the state’s Most Outstanding College and High School Chapters for the 2024–25 school year.
Both chapters were recognized on the national stage at the 2025 Best Buddies Leadership Conference (BBLC), where each state had the opportunity to nominate its most exemplary chapters across school levels. South Lyon and University of Michigan were chosen to represent Michigan, and both were honored on the national stage for their exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to inclusion.
Incoming Chapter President Ava Klotz accepted the award on behalf of South Lyon High School. Evan Bursch, a participant from the University of Michigan chapter, joined Lydia Goff, Lead Program Manager of Best Buddies Michigan (and University of Michigan alumna), in accepting the award.
This award reflects the dedication and passion of student leaders, members, and advisors who work tirelessly to create inclusive school communities. Last year’s success was made possible through the leadership of former South Lyon Chapter President Addison Smith and Advisor Courtney Hindersman, as well as former University of Michigan Chapter President Megan Loren and Advisor Julia McMorrough. Their efforts paved the way for meaningful friendships, greater awareness, and expanded opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Both chapters led the way in school chapter Friendship Walk fundraising in April 2025, cumulatively raising over $19,000 for the state.
The moment was made even more special by the opportunity to get a picture with Best Buddies Founder and CEO Anthony Kennedy Shriver, who joined the celebration and recognized the achievements of chapters across the country.
“These chapters set a prime example for our programs throughout the state of Michigan. We could not be more thankful for the passion and heart that their leadership teams pour in to making their chapters thrive,” says Lydia Goff.
