Sofia McDaniel Joins the Best Buddies Advisory Board in Richmond
We are thrilled to welcome Sofia McDaniel, J.D., to the Best Buddies in Virginia & DC Advisory Board. Sofia brings a wealth of experience in education policy, nonprofit leadership, and community engagement, along with a personal passion for inclusion and advocacy. Her unique perspective and dedication to service make her an invaluable addition to our advisory team.
Sofia McDaniel, J.D., is a state education policy leader currently leading transformative work in the Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Innovation. Sofia is committed to modernizing education systems and expanding innovative school models that improve outcomes for all learners.
With a background in law, consulting, and nonprofit leadership, Sofia has also played a key role in domestic violence prevention, helping launch Florida’s first statewide faith-based initiative addressing the issue.
A proud sister to two siblings with autism, Sofia brings a deep personal commitment to Best Buddies’ mission. In 2025, she chaired the Richmond Friendship Walk, raising critical funds in support of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Sofia earned her J.D. cum laude from Ohio Northern University and holds a B.A. in Biology from George Mason University. A semifinalist in Miss Virginia USA 2025 and a member of the Impact Advisory Team for Girls on the Run Richmond, she remains active in service and community engagement throughout the Richmond area.
As a member of the advisory board, Sofia looks forward to supporting Best Buddies’ continued growth across Virginia and DC. She is especially eager to help strengthen community partnerships, amplify participant voices, and champion inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Sofia joins Pete Peterson, and Paul Marretti on the advisory board. You can get involved by registering to volunteer or joining the adult friendship program Citizens. Through Citizens, people with and without disabilities are matched in meaningful and mutually beneficial friendships, supported by the local Best Buddies Program Manager in Richmond.
