Thank you to our amazing year-round partner, PLAN of MA and RI! This year, they were the Presenting Sponsor of our spring and fall event series including the 2025 Friendship Walks, Hyannisport Golf Tournament, and Party for a Purpose Gala.

Family is the heart of everyone’s life. Sometimes members of our family need some support to help them live their “best” life. PLAN (Planned Lifetime Assistance Network of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Inc.) a 501(c)3 nonprofit can offer your family support through the administration of a Special Needs Trust. Many people incorrectly assume that trusts are for families of significant means, but the reality is that a special needs trust can be an important part of securing the future of an individual of different abilities, regardless of the family’s wealth.

PLAN has been helping families since the late 1960s. We are professional trustees whose mission is to help disabled people preserve assets, protect access to public benefits and helping your loved one achieve a high quality of life. Each beneficiary is assigned a Service Coordinator, who is a Licensed Social Worker, for the life of the trust. These individuals have extensive experience with all types of disabilities and all ages. They will work with beneficiaries to address day-to-day and long-term needs to be met by the trust.

The primary role of a Trustee is the responsibility of disbursement of funds, managing the trust’s operation, and ensuring that it adheres to relevant federal, state regulations or any potential negative impact to benefit eligibility. There is no minimum to open a special needs trust with PLAN, but we do recommend it not be less than $10,000 to start.

Proper planning for the future creates peace of mind. It enables a beneficiary to preserve their public benefits, supplement their needs and have the means to maintain a comfortable, healthy, and fulfilling life.

Ann Arbor, Michigan – September 2025

On September 7, 2025, Best Buddies Michigan kicked off the school year with its biggest Local Leadership Training Day yet, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor! This annual event brought together student leaders and advisors from school chapters across the state for a day of learning and collaboration, combined with an engaging theme: “Lead in Full Color.”

A total of 40 participants representing 19 chapters and two prospective chapters joined the workshop, setting a new record for Michigan and marking an incredible milestone for our programs. What made this achievement even more special was the number of new chapters represented. Seeing so many first-time leaders show up eager to learn, share ideas, and build friendships highlighted the exciting growth of Best Buddies in Michigan.

2025 BBMI Local Leadership Training Day Inclusion Everywhere

The training focused on equipping chapters with the tools they need to lead with confidence. Participants explored best practices for recruitment and events, became more familiar with BB360, and shared strategies for creating strong one-to-one friendships in their schools. Along the way, they had the chance to connect with peers from across Michigan, sparking collaboration and building a supportive community of leaders ready to make a difference.

To capture the spirit of the day, the event carried the theme “Lead in Full Color.” Each participant reflected on their hopes for the year by setting a leadership goal, written on a colorful paint swatch. As a final takeaway, everyone got to make their own bouquet of flowers — a symbol of the bright, bold impact they will bring back to their schools and communities.

Local Leadership Training Day was not only a chance to prepare for the year ahead, but also a celebration of growth, energy, and the power of inclusion. With record participation, Best Buddies Michigan is starting the school year stronger than ever. The future is looking colorful, confident, and full of possibility. We are so thankful for everyone’s participation and continued leadership.

2025 BBPA Back to School Across the Commonwealth

Back to School, Back to Friendships Across Pennsylvania

As students return to classrooms across the Commonwealth, Best Buddies in Pennsylvania is celebrating the start of another exciting school year filled with friendship, leadership, and inclusion. The beginning of a new year is always a special time—it’s a chance for students to reconnect, welcome new members, and build communities that embrace everyone for who they are.

This year, Best Buddies in Pennsylvania proudly supports 169 school friendship chapters. These include 36 elementary schools, 43 middle schools, 60 high schools, and 28 colleges, each one creating opportunities for students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to form meaningful friendships, grow as leaders, and experience true belonging.

The impact of these chapters is significant. During the 2023–2024 school year, more than 8,000 students across the state participated in Best Buddies programs. Over the past five years, participation in Pennsylvania’s school friendship chapters has doubled, showing the growing demand and enthusiasm for inclusive communities. From friendship pairings and advocacy trainings to social events and service projects, our programs continue to transform the culture of schools and inspire students to lead with kindness.

2025 BBPA Back to School Across the Commonwealth Spreading the Mission

Already this fall, chapters are buzzing with energy. Schools are hosting kickoff meetings, recruitment parties, and advocacy trainings, welcoming new members and setting the tone for another impactful year. These early activities help students build strong connections and create spaces where everyone feels included. The momentum is contagious—students are excited to join, teachers and advisors are energized to lead, and families see firsthand the positive change inclusion brings.

But the heart of Best Buddies’ back-to-school season isn’t just about numbers or events—it’s about the individual stories. It’s about the student who finds their first real friend, the leader who discovers their voice, and the school that begins to shift toward a culture of acceptance. Together, these moments create ripples of impact that extend far beyond the classroom.

Best Buddies in Pennsylvania is proud to stand alongside our students, educators, and families as we begin this new year. With every chapter meeting, every new friendship, and every act of advocacy, we are moving closer to a world where inclusion is not the exception, but the norm.

Here’s to a school year filled with connection, joy, and the power of friendship. Together, we’re making Pennsylvania a brighter, more inclusive place for all.

2025 BBPA Meet Grace Mayhugh

Meet Grace Mayhugh, a 17-year-old senior at Knoch High School whose passion for inclusion is helping to shape the future of Best Buddies in Pennsylvania. Grace has been involved with Best Buddies for three years, but it was in 2023 that she truly fell in love with the program. Since then, her commitment to building friendships and spreading inclusion has only grown stronger.

During the 2024–2025 school year, Grace served as her chapter’s Social Media Coordinator, using her creativity to highlight events, share success stories, and encourage more students to get involved. This year, she’s stepped into even greater leadership roles—serving as the Chapter President at Knoch High School and representing her peers across the state as a member of Pennsylvania’s Student Advisory Board.

Grace’s leadership extends well beyond her school. At the recent Building Bridges Event, she confidently spoke to community members about the importance of inclusion and how they can support Best Buddies. She also attended the Best Buddies Leadership Conference this summer, gaining valuable skills in advocacy, teamwork, and program growth while connecting with student leaders from across the country.

2025 BBPA Meet Grace Mayhugh With Friends

Her enthusiasm and dedication shine through in everything she does. Whether she’s leading her chapter, volunteering in her community, or speaking to new audiences about the mission of inclusion, Grace continues to make a lasting impact.

Outside of Best Buddies, Grace keeps busy with a part-time job and participates in several school activities, including Yearbook, Spanish Club, Photography Club, and Reading Club. Her energy is truly contagious, and she inspires others to join the movement of friendship and belonging.

Grace is a shining example of the power of youth leadership—and a reminder that when students step up for inclusion, they create ripples of impact that extend far beyond their own communities.

2025 BBVADC Staff Photo

We’re so excited to share that Best Buddies in Virginia & DC has officially moved! After three years in the Tysons Corner Center, our team now calls Boone Boulevard our new home.

When we first moved into the Tysons Mall in 2022, our staff included just seven members. Now, thanks to incredible growth over the past five years, we’re a 12-person strong team! Together, we’ve opened new school chapters, secured new jobs for people with IDD, trained countless leaders through the Ambassadors program, and even broken fundraising records. This new space is a reflection of the impact we’ve made—and the even greater impact to come.

Our new office offers more room for on-site workplace assessments hosted by our Employment Consultants, giving job participants hands-on opportunities to sharpen their skills. It’s also the perfect setting for hosting more formal Ambassador trainings and fun Citizens friendship events.

2025 BBVADC Weve moved the office

The office also allows for more community gatherings in the downstairs conference rooms.  During our first week, Jack Beckner, our Manager of Transitions, hosted a week-long pre-ETS Transitions workshop. Earlier this month, we hosted a Champion of the Year Kickoff in the same beautiful space. No matter where we are, the Best Buddies in Virginia & DC office is a space where we can come together to foster inclusion and friendship.

This move wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of our Best Buddies community. Thank you to Mackenzie Fontaine, Macerich, and the Tysons Corner Center for hosting us for five wonderful years. Thank you to Fletcher Gill of The Genau Group for helping us secure this beautiful new location, and to the BNI McLean Business Forum for making that connection happen. We’re also grateful to Hana Dagne from Link Parks and Link Logistics for welcoming us, and to Adam Giere and the Navy Federal Credit Union team for helping us move and set up our new space.

To everyone who has supported and donated to Best Buddies in Virginia & DC—thank you. Because of you, we now have not just a new workplace, but a thriving hub where we can continue to grow our mission of inclusion across the region.

2025 BBVADC Gaby’s Best Buddies Journey

Gabriella Dominguez, also known to her friends as Gaby, is the President of the Best Buddies chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University.

“Inclusion is a core value in my life,” Gaby shared, “as I have always advocated for equality and equity, even as a child.”

Gaby has been a part of Best Buddies since middle school, serving as the Vice President at Rachel Carson Middle School in Herndon, VA from 2013–2015, and continued her involvement throughout high school at Bishop O’Connell.

“As my high school had an inclusion program for students with IDD, watching the beauty of the program in action proved how dire it is for people to have an inclusive community,” she shared.

“Additionally, as someone who is going into the realm of Psychology, learning from a scientific standpoint how truly important inclusion is, allows me to utilize my personal experience in conjunction with my career-driven motives to help better the world.”

Gaby moved to VCU and started her school’s Best Buddies chapter in 2023. Although she’s now studying in Richmond, she continues to stay connected with her high school Buddy and other Best Buddies friends from earlier years.

Looking ahead, Gaby and the VCU Best Buddies chapter have exciting plans for the upcoming school year, including fun music-oriented and dance events.

“I hope to expand our Best Buddies family to students and other community members who may not have been involved prior, especially with the increase of the student population at VCU,” Gaby shared.

Her advice to anyone starting a Best Buddies chapter for the first time: stay present.

“There can be a whirlwind of anxieties in an attempt to complete every necessary step, yet it will always fall into place how it’s supposed to! Your chapter is to be tailored to your specific school and community, so be creative, communicative, and unconditionally supportive. No matter how you approach the process, anyone involved will simply be grateful for your action, awareness, compassion, and patience!”
